Governor nominee hopes to 'pull off a Jesse Ventura'

Rich Whitney, the Illinois Green Party's nominee for governor, said Monday he hopes to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction and "pull off a Jesse Ventura" by winning the November general election.

Ventura, a former pro wrestler, stunned political observers in 1998, when, as a Reform Party candidate, he defeated the major-party candidates for Minnesota governor.

Whitney, a 51-year-old Carbondale attorney, heads the Illinois Green Party's first slate of candidates for statewide elective office. They filed nominating petitions with the State Board of Elections on Monday, the deadline for "new party" candidates.

The number of submitted signatures is "well in excess" of the 25,000 the party is supposed to have to get on the ballot, he said at a Statehouse news conference.

"We worked our tails off, to be quite blunt about it," Whitney said of the process of collecting signatures. "One of the things we found out is that Illinois voters are clamoring for a better choice on the ballot."

The Green Party represents a "fresh and clean alternative" to the Democratic and Republican parties, he said.

"The people want a third choice. It'll be healthier for our democracy," he added. "I think it is entirely not only possible, but plausible, that we could pull off a Jesse Ventura in this state."

The other Green Party hopefuls are Julie Samuels of Oak Park for lieutenant governor, David Black of Belvidere for attorney general, Karen Peterson of Chicago for secretary of state, Dan Rodriguez Schlorff of Chicago for treasurer and Alicia Snyder of Centralia for comptroller.

Signatures for the Green Party slate were collected throughout Illinois, Whitney said.

"Yes, we are getting a nice share from college towns like Carbondale and Champaign-Urbana," he said. "But we also got quite a few from Peoria. We play well in Peoria, so to speak."

Whitney said he supports a legislative proposal that would raise the state income tax while abating property taxes. That plan, which was introduced in February 2005 but never has come up for a vote, would generate revenue to help schools and to "adequately support" social services and workers' pensions, he said.

He also backs a statewide, universal health-care program that would be funded by a "modest payroll tax" on taxpayers.

Whitney said Green Party members refuse to accept corporate campaign contributions, and that he and his fellow candidates hope to raise campaign funds by collecting many small, individual donations.

Whitney has prior experience as a Green Party political candidate. He ran in 2002 and 2004 for a state representative seat in southern Illinois, losing both times to Republican Mike Bost of Carbondale.

Also filing with the State Board of Elections on Monday were statewide slates of candidates for the Independence Party of Illinois and the Constitution Party of Illinois.

A cursory check of the Independence Party's nominating petitions Monday afternoon revealed a total of 127 signatures, far short of the required number of 25,000.

The names of the Green Party candidates listed on the petitions could be removed from the Nov. 7 general election ballot if someone successfully challenges the validity of the petitions.

The Constitution Party filed nominating papers with the State Board just before the 5 p.m. deadline, and it was not immediately clear whether they appeared to meet the signature requirement.

If only there were a party that wasn't completely corrupt and didn't want to raise the taxes on the few people who can still find a job downstate.

Great Idea! I just don't believe the residents of the great state of Illinois are ready for a third party. The two ho-hum parties are just too "set in stone".

It's about time we had another choice we the people really don't have a chance to chose our governor the way the primarys are done .

I will vote for him, we need a change, if he's allowed to run in this next election.

I think he'll (at least) get alot of votes, being that the Blago and Topinka are both boneheads.

It is time for a successful third party that can be taken seriously. Since he won't be able to compete with Blago dollar wise, those interested should be helping him out by word of mouth. Blago can't compete on those terms.

Rod is applauding this move. The presence of a third party has just assured him a victory. Most of the votes won't come from his side. Great four more years of hell.

Probably not the smartest thing to start off by comparing yourself to Jesse Ventura. Of course they have no problem in Carbondale and Champaign. Those are "party" schools areas aren't they? Tee hee hee.

For get Mr.Whitney,You just ani't gonna make it.

Agree with Hmmmm wrote at 6/27/2006 1:13:57 PM

Comparing oneself to Jesse Ventura is about as smart as comparing oneself to Blago, or George Ryan, or Grigori Rasputin.

where have you gone joe dimaggio? wrote at 6/27/2006 1:20:20 PM

I am waiting for the day when true public servants step forward and file for candidacy . I dont care what party you belong to I just want some decent people, with normal lives chock full of mistakes and successes who can step forward and be a leader. If you made a mistake in your past then so be it step up to the plate and see what you can do. Too many of us, myself included, are too afraid of having our skeletons exposed. Our entire state is awash in corruption and job peddling. Where are the tru public servants?? I will vote for you if you are honest about your mistakes and seem sincere in your convictions. Blago, J topinka NO THANK YOU been there done that. whos next?

so grateful wrote at 6/27/2006 4:08:59 PM

i'm so grateful that those people took the time and energy to collect thousands of signatures so that we could all enjoy another choice on the ballot. i just wish the rules didn't make it so they had to. if they get kicked off the ballot by a challenger, i hope everyone is outraged.

Have any of you "oh so grateful" people bothered to read the Green Party platform ? I didn't think so....they're so far left they make Blago look like Pat Robertson. If anything, they'll take votes aways from the dems.

I'm glad to see the Greens on the ballot. They offer the only downstater running for Governor, and the only candidate not tainted by corruption scandals. Whitney is the only choice for honest government this year.
